  • Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
  • More than one-third of U.S. adults and approximately 17% of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese (CDC) External Web Site Icon.
  • Approximately 300,000 deaths per year may be attributable to obesity (Office of the Surgeon General) External Web Site Icon.
  • The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars (Finkelstein et al., 2009).
