What Works Fact Sheet: Diabetes Prevention and Control
In 2012, over 29 million Americans had diabetes. This number increases by over a million newly diagnosed cases each year. Diabetes is currently the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. There are an additional 86 million Americans who have prediabetes, which means that they are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Thirty three percent of Americans have diabetes or prediabetes, and this percentage is growing.
This brochure is designed to help public health program planners, community advocates, educators, and policymakers find proven intervention strategies—including programs, services, and policies—to develop successful diabetes prevention and control interventions and campaigns. It can help decision makers in both public and private sectors make choices about what intervention strategies are best for their communities.
