Jonathan E. Fielding Community Guide Champion Award Recognizes Two Public Health Leaders

Jonathan Fielding Robert (Bob) Brewer. In June, The Community Guide established the Jonathan E. Fielding Community Guide Champion award to recognize individuals who enthusiastically support and promote the use of Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommendations and the systematic review methods used to reach them.

The first recipient was the award’s namesake, Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, MBA, MA. Dr. Fielding was a founding member of the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) who served as chair for 18 of his 23 years with the CPSTF. His dedication resulted in the CPSTF’s singular ability to provide economic findings to inform decisions about programs, policies, and services and to address social determinants of health and health equity issues.

In August, Robert (Bob) Brewer, MD, MSPH, CAPT, USPHS (ret) received the Jonathan E. Fielding Community Guide Champion Award in recognition of his critical contributions. Dr. Brewer helped launch CDC’s Alcohol Program and worked closely with the Community Guide branch to conduct a series of systematic reviews on the effectiveness of population-based prevention strategies for excessive alcohol use. Among his many contributions, Dr. Brewer collaborated with leadership in what is now the Division of Population Health to leverage limited resources to support Community Guide staff conducting and disseminating the reviews.

The Community Guide and all its partners are honored to have such champions in Dr. Fielding and Dr. Brewer, two highly regarded leaders in public health.
