The systematic reviews by the Guide to Community
Preventive Services (Community Guide) of selected
population-based interventions designed to improve
early detection and control of cancer focused
on strategies to improve the delivery of screening
for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer
in community and healthcare settings.
These strategies address barriers to screening
such as client-related barriers (e.g., knowledge
or attitude), access barriers, or provider and
healthcare system barriers. Within each of these
larger strategies the Task Force considered
specific interventions.
Recognizing independent factors associated
with each screening test, reviews focused on
outcomes specific to each of the three cancer
sites considered in these reviews. Therefore,
a particular intervention may be recommended
to increase screening for one type of cancer
while there may be insufficient evidence to
determine the effectiveness of the intervention
in increasing screening for other types of cancer.
